An essential aspect or "pillar" of middle school is school-wide enrichment (or "Brainstorm") activities that mix our 3 grade groups in interesting, academic activities that are not directly assessed (marked). I have led several Brainstorms throughout the years:
I love Brainstorm as it allows students to mix in pro-social situations. School-wide enrichment can allow Monterey students to make connections beyond the school. Brainstorm occurs in Terms 1 and 3. Students choose 3 or 4 activities from a list of ~20 activities and receive one of their choices. They attend Brainstorm for 1 hour each Wednesday for (usually) 9 weeks duration.
- EcoKeepers (Native plant restoration at Anderson Hill Park;
- Artists on Bicycles (wildlife art out-trips);
- Bicycle Mentors (bike safety workshops for elementary school students;
- Dragon's Den (useful inventions made by students);
- Bridge (the card game);
- Aikido (the martial art).

Bicycle Mentors
This school wide is dedicated to teaching safe street cycling skills to elementary school age students by middle school age students. Through peer teaching/ bike rodeo stations approach, Monterey students create a teaching and learning opportunity for students who will be their grade 6 schoolmates in the next school year. It's a simple yet powerful formula.
