Be part of a unique classroom at the Grade 6 & 7 level in Ocean Studies! Join students who choose an outdoor, active curriculum that teaches biology and wildlife with hands-on experiences; that unites environment and mobile technology; that brings experts from Marine Biology, Fine Arts, First Nations and outdoor training to us. Our class experiences will include several sea kayak skills sessions, tours and expeditions carefully planned through the school year.

Our first paddling sessions in the Oak Bay area will leave from the small beach to the southwest of the Oak Bay Marina parking lot, (known as Turkey Head), located near the corner of Beach Drive and Orchard Avenue. (above, left)
Green Group students, please be at the put-in by 8:30AM next Monday morning, Sept. 12. Be ready to help guides with gear, especially carrying kayaks down to the beach. Kayak session is planned for 3 hours. Eat lunch at the beach, meet Ms. Thornton at noon to walk back to Monterey, dismissal from school at 3pm.
Blue Group students, please come to Monterey for 8:50AM next Monday morning, Sept. 12. Walk with Ms Thornton to the put-in, eat lunch there. Kayak session is planned for 3 hours. Be ready to help guides with gear, especially carrying kayaks back to the boat trailer. Then students may be dismissed to parents who have come to pick up their son/daughter at ~3pm. Any remaining students will be brought back to school for dismissal at ~3:30-4pm (students may be dismissed from the Oak Bay Marina with written permission).

about the upcoming kayak overnight trip to Portland Island, Gulf Is. National Park, this
Friday June 14/Sunday June 16, 2019.
Where and When: Unless weather dictates an alternate trip, launch/pull-out from Swartz Bay beach, beside public wharf (red railings). Located just east (to the right) of Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. Take the 'Canoe Cove' turn-off at the last lights. If you use Google Maps, see Dolphin Road, left at Barnacle Road.
Itinerary:
Friday June 14: Blue Group: you do not come to school. Please ensure you are completely ready for the trip.
Green Group: Please meet at the Swartz Bay put-in at 8:30AM ready to carry kayaks down to the beach. Ensure you have had a good night’s sleep (straight to bed after the Music Concert on Wed. June 1!), a COMPLETE!! Breakfast, used the washroom, have filled your water bottles, and have applied sunscreen. Bring your gear packed and waterproofed.
Saturday June 15: We will return to Swartz Bay at approximately 3:00pm and students may leave when the guides are satisfied the gear has sorted and stored.
Sunday June 16: Blue Group: Please meet at the Swartz Bay put-in at 8:30AM ready to carry kayaks down to the beach. Ensure you have had a good night’s sleep, a COMPLETE!! Breakfast, used the washroom, have filled your water bottles, and have applied sunscreen. Bring your gear packed and waterproofed.
Monday June 17: Green Group: you do not come to school. Please ensure you properly clean and dry your equipment, especially borrowed tents.
Blue Group: We will return to Swartz Bay at approximately 3:00pm and students may leave when the guides are satisfied the gear has sorted and stored.
Tuesday June 18: Class may sleep in. Come to school for Block 3, at 11:00AM. Get ready to start your Kayak Trip #6 Reflection…!
