In our next Computer Lab session I will be showing students how they can hand in computer generated documents to a school based, shared, electronic folder. That's right, paperless! Students will bring home the year-starter Math Assessment. Parents, please review the booklet, sign the front page and return it so students may file it in their Portfolio (box on counter, back of classroom). We will look at it during Parent-teacher Interviews next week. Students work in teams to solve the "Juice Box Problem". The most effective Math programs worldwide (eg. Singapore) assign students higher order, multistep single problems to solve in long lesson blocks. Today I used this format to have groups of 3 investigate this challenge which included a mini-lesson on volume (length X width X height): "How many juice boxes, 5cm X 3cm X 10cm fit in a packing box, 60cm X 60cm X 60cm?" (#28, Gr.7 VIDMA). Correct solutions had to be accompanied by cooperative teamwork. Then we drank the juice. No math homework tonight.
