Mr. Brown has stick insects in the classroom!
We have drawn them, fed them, researched at least 1 fact on Phasmids. Now students will work in pairs to create an online presentation using Prezi, a zooming slideshow program. See project assignment and pairs of students, below (click on .pdf link). Due Mon. Oct. 28, 2013.

Thanks to those parents who drove for our Camp Thunderbird day for the Gold Team last week. All of our students participated in Archery/Orienteering; half our class did rock-climbing and half did canoeing. In their reflections afterwards, students wrote that the day provide chances to help each other, work together as a group and have fun.
Almost all parents have meet me shortly for Parent-Teacher Interviews last week. Some families have noticed some Math flashcards resulting from our conversations; families are also encouraged to visit the Math resources available through the school website: "awesome middle school websites" at

The Class Charter
We spent most of today analyzing the rules we have at home and at school. We looked beneath rules for the reason for our rules: they speak to the values we hold as a community. We then decided on the most important values for our class and built them into a declaration, wrote it on a worn out flag and everyone signed it. It is now displayed it in the classroom, as a reminder that we value "being safe, healthy, aware and responsible so that everyone learns". It is vitally important in a mixed age class that we overtly build a strong social compact.
