Last week of October, and by now students are into the swing of the school year. Please note that if students are NOT keeping up with homework/assignments I will indicate so by the student's classroom number (between # 1 and 28). Please see last week's blog, below, for missing Social Studies assignments. L.A. : Today a Reflection on the paddling day at Thetis Lake was due. The following students' work is missing (by classroom number) : 4, 9, 18, & 21. Thank you for letting me know when there is a reason for needing more time; otherwise schoolwork is expected on time. On the up-side, here are some drawings from our day that make me say, "Wow!" Spelling: Unit 3 assigned today. Test and Sentences assignment due this Friday Oct. 31. The list words and instructions are in the document below. Kayaking this week: Green Group paddles this Thursday morning. Meet at Willows Beach at 8:50AM. We will walk back to the school at noon. Regular dismissal from Monterey at 3pm on that day. Blue Group will paddle next Thursday November 6. Here is a reminder of what to bring: Rain gear - WATERPROOF - test it in the shower! (pants and coat) “Wet shoes”: rubber boots, running shoes, aqua socks, or sturdy sandals “Dry shoes” - for walking back(e.g. running shoes) Pants: (quick-dry material) - NO COTTON, NO JEANS) 1 long sleeve shirt or quick-dry material Fleece (pile) jacket or wool sweater Change of Wool or poly socks Sun hat Shorts/bathing suit (optional: wetsuit) Warm gloves toque Please drop your homework off at the school before coming to the beach. Everything must be carried in a backpack; NOTHING IN YOUR HANDS/ARMS WHEN WALKING PLEASE. Other News - photo packages sent home today - Curriculum Completion afternoon will be Thursday Nov. 13 for students with missing / incomplete work. - The Greater Victoria School District has given me official approval to proceed with my Masters in Education research (I talked about it on our first Teacher-Parent meeting in September). If students and families would please sign and return the white of copy of the Letter of Consent and return the white copy a.s.a.p. it would really help. Last week Green Group set the bar high during their paddling training at Thetis Lake. The challenge of the day was to capsize (tip over) the kayaks and recover (get back in and be able to keep going, or better--rescue your friend!). Tomorrow, Blue Group gets the same training, with thanks to Angie Cote, Kerry Vaughn and Maria K for being our volunteer parent drivers. Blue Group please meet at the school at 7:50 AM on Thursday October 23 with the following: -raingear (paddling top or raincoat + rainpants) -change of dry clothes -lunch and waterbottle (filled) and cup for hot choc. -wet shoes to change into (wear dry land shoes in the cars please) -warm hat -sunhat (full brimmed hat) -bathing suit (for capsizes) -towel Students will leave Thetis Lake 2:00 to 2:30pm (after the kayaks are loaded) and should report to the office upon return to verify safe trip back to Monterey; they might be later than 3:00pm if traffic is heavy. Classroom assignments : Spelling assignment this week is the same as 2 weeks' ago -- please compose 10 sentences with 2 list words in each, due next Monday October 27. Dictation test also on Monday. Math (Mr. Robinson) due next Monday: page 9, #15-37 and p. 11, #5-21 (odd questions only) Missing Work: Advisory: Basic Needs Posters - The following students did not have their assignment ready by its due date today (by classroom #) : 12, 9, 27, 13. Social Studies: the following students have not yet handed in their "What in the World" current events assignment (and are therefore heading in the direction of Curriculum Completion Day), by classroom number: 6, 9. These students do not yet meet expectations and must improve or complete this assignment: 1, 10, 18, 23. P.E.: The following students have NOT had gym strip (change of top, pants and indoor running shoes) 2 times during recent checks in gym class. Super day yesterday at Thetis Lake with Green Group. Some students really stretched their skills and confidence when paddling and capsizing in the lake in autumn weather. Language Arts: Students will complete a written reflection on their day at Thetis Lake as a writing assignment. It will be due on Monday October 27, the next school day after Blue Group paddles (they go on Thursday Oct. 23 and Friday Oct 24 is a proD day). Green Group is advised to start a rough copy this weekend, keeping in mind that we will be working on descriptive language with the Thesaurus next week at school. Pls see file below. Hi Parents and students of MOSP, This Thursday October 16 we begin the first of 2 all-day kayak sessions with Green group doing Kayak Skills/Rescues at Thetis Lake all day. Blue group will meet Ms. Thornton in our classroom at 8:50 AM and work with her, having regular scheduled Library, P.E., Music blocks. Blue group kayaks on October 23 and Green Group will be at school. Kayakers please come to school EARLY on Thursday, 7:50 AM. Bring: 1) Rain gear (top and bottoms) 2) "Wet shoes"- sandals, water socks, neoprene booties, old running shoes, crocs (no flip flops) 3) Sun protection - screen, glasses, hat 4) Warm layer - non cotton 5) Complete change of clothes 6) Towel 7) Swim suit - should arrive with it on (optional: wetsuit) 8) Toque 9) Cup - for hot chocolate 10) Lunch and snacks 11) Water bottle (with water in it) Drivers: please make sure you have completed a Criminal Record Check (new school policy this year; please click on the link in the Monterey School Newsletter for October). Green Group paddled last week at Willows Beach and Blue Group goes this week. Students handled the walk to Willows really well and are getting faster at changing from walking to paddling clothes and back again after each paddle. We've been blessed with calm, sunny weather--lucky in October! Please see the photo of the Gear List on the whiteboard (last week's post) for reminders on what to bring. -if you wish to be picked up at (approximately) 2:30pm at Willows, please send a paper note on the day of the trip including parent/guardian signature. -(Always, that is, for the whole school year) if you are NOT paddling you are working on the assignment given by Ms. Keely Thornton. All Seaside Alphabets are due on Monday October 14. Homework - Tuesday October 7 Social Studies: WiTW (What in the World) Current events news articles on Ebola/Gaza Strip/Northern Gateway Pipeline. There are 3 levels of academic difficulty students may work choose: MOuntain, Uphill and Straight Ahead. Read and complete activities on the articles and complete the map that includes the Gaza Strip. Due: next Tuesday October 14 (a week from now) Science: Sea Creature sports Card (like a baseball or a hockey card, but for wildlife), blue cardstock handed out last week, assignment details in last week's post (see below). Due: this Friday Oct. 10. Advisory: one presentable (coloured, neat & complete) page of "About Me" booklet due Wed. October 8. Math: Page 47, #1-16 due for Mr. Robinson tomorrow. (Expect a small amount of practice daily!) L.A. = Spelling First Week words (taken from Ocean Studies Assign.#1 handed back today). Words dictated and marked today. Centre SWIM / SKATE activities have been scheduled and letter distributed yesterday. Students without permission for this Friday morning's trip will remain at school. Unlike other days our October walking trip takes place in the morning. All students will walk to & from the rec centre (as this is part of our P.E. program). On trips in the afternoons, students may be dismissed from OB Rec if parents give a paper note on the day of the trip including parent/guardian signature. Vending machines are out of bounds, so bring a snack; forgetful students forfeit the next Oak Bay occasion. Please see 'Notices to Families' tab for a copy of the permission letter.

Mark BrownKayaker since 1989, professional sea kayak guide in coastal B.C., Costa Rica and Belize in the 1990s, I started a family in 2000. Settling in Victoria and transitioning from environmental education to public school teacher, I joined Monterey Ele. School and participated 'on the ground floor' as we transformed to middle school in 2007. In 2013 I moved from Gr. 6 to Gr.6/7 and in 2014 created MOSP.
