Welcome to Thursdays with Kathryn Cook! Ms. Cook is a middle school teacher, marine biologist and former Head of Education Programs at the Vancouver Aquarium. She will be teaching MOSP students on Thursdays starting October 22 until the spring in the areas of Science (Marine and Environmental Biology), Math and P. E. (lots of walking field trips in our neighbourhood to explore nature). This is Ms. Cook’s second year working with MOSP. She brings a wealth of expertise to our classroom, integrating subject areas that focus on hands-on, hands-wet learning. Look forward to guest speakers, field trips and projects that focus on our local ecosystems.
Ms. Cook also takes over the Ecokeepers Brainstorm on Thursdays. Ms. Cook would like to begin our Thursday afternoon outings next week but we need parent volunteers to make this happen. If you can join us for the afternoon on October 22, please let Kathryn know ([email protected]). Note about Kayak Session next Monday: We meet at Turkey Head at 8:30AM. Students will walk back to the school at lunchtime for Green Group-next Monday Oct. 19; Blue group-next Monday Oct. 26. Please see our new launch location info. by scrolling down below to the September 15 post, "Kayak Day 1..." After Parent-Teacher Interviews: I really appreciated the time to get to know your son/daughter more deeply. Thank you for your conservations on Thursday evening. If you feel like our meeting was incomplete please join those several parents who have personally asked for a follow-up meeting concerning their child, or concerning MOSP's unique opportunities. I will reply to your emails and block a calendar time titled 'PTI'; please refer to the calendar on this site's home page. ______________ ______________________ _______________ Thanks to those 16 families who have used Monterey School's online booking system to reserve a 10 minute conference on Thursday October 15. Students will be dismissed at lunchtime. During the afternoon and evening I will highlight those two critical areas of education: numeracy and literacy. I have already asked families to review student's Vancouver Is. Diagnostic Math Assessment (VIDMA). I also have run a Reading Comprehension Assessment (the R.A.D.) recently. I will quickly review both these assessments at the Parent-Teacher Conferences. In other news, all students seem to really enjoy the Monterey Ocean Studies Program. Please find below a questionnaire "Parents are Partners" that parents might print, complete and bring to the Conferences. If we do not have time to discuss it then please consult the calendar on the Home Page of this website, email me a request to meet, and I will get back to you a.s.a.p. Please also note our MOSP potluck coming up soon on Wed. Nov. 25.

Mr. Mark BrownKayaker since 1989, professional sea kayak guide in coastal B.C., Costa Rica and Belize in the 1990s, I started a family in 2000. Settling in Victoria and transitioning from environmental education to public school teacher, I joined Monterey Ele. School and participated 'on the ground floor' as we transformed to middle school in 2007. In 2013 I moved from Gr. 6 to Gr.6/7 and in 2014 created MOSP. I bike to work, love Japanese cuisine, and can be found playing with our 2 middle school and high school age kids, or swimming while armed with rubber ducks... Archives
